I’m fundraising to support families facing childhood cancer

I am supporting Redkite by raising funds through hiking a portion of the Camino Trail in Spain. I will be hiking a rough total of 205KM over 9 days in April of 2024.

I’ve created this page because I want to make a difference. I’m inspired by the work that Redkite does, and they been a significant help to a friend I know dearly and work with on a day to day basis.

Help me help them by donating to my page through the donate button now! The more people who support Redkite enables them to support more children and families, so please donate and share my page with your friends and family! Thank you for your generous support, it means a lot!

Day 9 - success is measured in the journey

Tuesday 16th Apr
Well there we have it, Day 9 is complete. I have officially travelled according to the official Compostela, 215km over 9 days. It’s been an honour and a privilege to be able to proudly support Redkite throughout my entire journey. And we’ve raised just over $7000 for Redkite, that is a life changing amount that will go a long way to help support families in need affected by childhood cancer in Australia. Thank you again to my work colleagues who worked tirelessly with me to help raise the funds that we did. And to Lucy my Redkite representative, thank you for your unwavering support throughout my entire project. To Grace, Jonah and the whole Stein family, I hope that things will always be on the uphill with Jonah’s journey, you have been fighting a long battle, and you all deserve the best. And to the family and friends of Louisa who allowed me to carry an image of their only child with me, who unfortunately lost her battle to cancer, her spirit helped me through the tough times of the hike that I didn’t think I would get through. That’s all from me for now, thank you again for this opportunity of a lifetime.

Day 8 - the home stretch

Monday 15th Apr
Another short day of 17km done. Only 20km left before my challenge is complete. It’s been quite the battle to get to this distance, but it’s been an amazing experience none the less, testing my limits and helping raise funds for a much needed cause. Onto tomorrow for our final destination of Santiago de Compostela!!!

Day 7 - Legs of steel

Monday 15th Apr
Day 7 done. We are on the home stretch now. Only 38km left over the next 2 days. But today was a whopping 35km in one day, I am both exhausted and in amazement as to the distance my body can handle in one go. But this is nothing in comparison as to the challenges families and children have to go through that are facing childhood cancer in Australia. It’s been a privilege to be able to proudly support Redkite and help raise funds for much needed services that Redkite provides, but the battle isn’t over yet. Onto the next town of Rua, a short 18km day, but a good way to ease back into it after the hard yards today.

Day 6 - gone like the wind

Sunday 14th Apr
Where did today go. It flew past at a million miles an hour. No, but for real, today felt really quick, the distance was shortened slightly than expected as my accomodation is about 4km out from the main town of Palas de Rei, and I caught up with some Brazilians that I met on day 2, who was worried I wouldn’t make it up the big hill on day 2 haha so great conversations made the day fly by too. Only problem is now, with the extra 4km I have to make up tomorrow, there is an additional 28km or so to do, to Azura. So roughly 33-34km to do tomorrow, longer than day 2, and I think just as many hills. By the end of tomorrow I’ll let you all know if I have any legs left haha.

Day 5 - woah we’re halfway there

Saturday 13th Apr
Corny joke I know but it had to be done haha. But that’s right, today I past the 100km to Santiago de Compostela marker which means I’m over halfway done!!! The end feels so close already, but I know there will be a few challenging set of terrains ahead. Onto tomorrow where I travel 24.8km to Palas de Rei!!!!

Day 4 - Short and sweet but it’s turning up the heat

Friday 12th Apr
Sorry for the delay in posting about Day 4 (11th April). The distance I’ve walked has become quite taxing and I got a very early night last night haha. It was a short day though of 18km, but the temperatures are now starting to increase into the mid to high 20’s so walking later in the day is getting a bit more cumbersome. None the less, I have arrived in Sarria with about 112km to go until we reach Santiago de Compostela. Today I move onto Portomarin with about another 21.5km of walking!

Day 3 - Smooth Sailing

Wednesday 10th Apr
Today was a good day. 20km in under 5 hours. Lots more people on this part of the track. Today I lived on the edge, passed a bunch of either bulls or cows with very menacing horns that were being ushered along by some farmers, while I was wearing my red singlet in the middle of Spain. I don’t think I’ve ever been so on edge before haha. My feet are weary once again, but a good nights rest should help the recovery process. Onto tomorrow where I will arrive at Sarria!

Day 2 - a test of endurance

Wednesday 10th Apr
Today was looking to be a good day. Clear skies, moderate temperatures, a nice cool breeze to keep your body refreshed, perfect conditions for hiking. What I didn’t account for was the toll the distance would take on me alongside a series of unforgiving hills. The prediction was 28.5km, which somehow turned into 31km when the directions led me astray a bit. Although my body is telling me that I’m in a lot of pain, I know the next few days will be easier, as this was perhaps the longest day of all 9. Now for some well deserved steak and a good nights sleep!

Day 1 Complete!

Tuesday 9th Apr
Day 1 on the Camino Trail is complete! Today was a 25km walk from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo. Completed in roughly 5 hours, and every time I thought I would stop for a break, I just decided to keep on walking haha. The scenery is amazing, although today was a real test with the wet weather, ranging from light sprinkling to pelting down rain, most of the wet weather gear is holding up so far. The weather is meant to clear up over the next few days, though temperatures are still quite cold up this part of Spain. Anyways, on to tomorrow, with an estimated 28.5km of walking, as we make our way to O Cebreiro!

T-2 Days

Friday 5th Apr
And so the first half of my journey begins with my flight to Spain leaving tonight. Im still overwhelmed by the generosity of people all around me, supporting me on this journey, and helping support raise money for families in need. We have already raised over $5K of much needed funds to help Redkite with their invaluable cause. Now for some much needed rest before the real challenge begins!

T-5 Days

Tuesday 2nd Apr
Hi again everyone, Thank you again to everyone who has generously donated so far to this great cause. In solidarity with those children and families who are affected by cancer, I have opted to shave my head for the journey, a somewhat refreshing but daring venture for someone who loves their thick lock of hair. With 5 days until I begin one of the most challenging hikes I have ever done, I am in awe as to how so many people from so many walks of life have been impacted by childhood cancer, but to hear the different stories that people have to tell, it has opened my eyes to see that even in the darkest of times, and the most tragic of circumstances it can bring people together to create generosity and support beyond belief. That’s all for now, but my next post will be when I’m on way to Spain!
