The trauma of cancer doesn’t end with treatment

When Indie was diagnosed with cancer, her mum Tylana remembers thinking, “I’m alone and I can’t explain to her what’s going on. She’s only three.”

Tylana gave up her job to stay beside Indie through treatment. Ryan took as much time off work as he could, but eventually had to return to work to keep paying the rent and supporting his family.

As treatment continued, they faced the heartbreak of watching their little girl change. “Within two weeks, I couldn't even recognise my child,” Tylana says.

Thanks to supporters like you, they received financial assistance with car registration and other bills. This meant Ryan could work a little less and spend more time with his family when they needed him most.

But cancer doesn't simply disappear when treatment ends.

It’s now been about two-and-a-half years since Indie was diagnosed. She gets tired easily from chemotherapy and still faces challenges other children her age don't have to think about.

Indie will finish treatment soon. She's returned to kindergarten, started dancing and is looking forward to starting big school next year.

But the effects of what she has been through may last much longer. Her treatment may affect how she grows, develops and feels. And for Tylana and Ryan, the trauma of having a child with cancer won't disappear overnight.
